Gary Peters: The Preston Years

Gary Peters has been in football in a variety of roles for 39 years; player, coach, scout, assistant, manager, Centre of Excellence manager, youth team coach and now Hereford United’s Director of Football. The role is new to him so there’s no real ‘form’ to relate back to, so instead I’ve looked at how he’s fared as manager over the years.

Importance of the first goal

It goes without saying, the first goal in a game is always key, but how do Hereford United fare when they score first, and how do they bounce back when they concede the opener? We’ve analysed the last 67 games – since the start of 2010/11 – to find out.

Where will the goals come from?

Goals have been hard to come by for Hereford this season, but fans will notice that all scorers are strikers; although Tom Barkhuizen has been deployed on the wing when he’s scored. Delroy Facey, Yoann Arquin and Sam Winnall are the others to find the net so far this season. Where are the goals going to come from to keep us up and, hopefully, push us up the table? Today we look at how the previous seasons’ goals totals broke down.

Why the Poor Discipline?

9 red cards and 98 yellows were given to Hereford United players during the 2010/11 season; 83 of the bookings were in the League, as well as 7 red cards. Only Stevenage received more red cards than Hereford in League Two, while the Bulls finished with the most yellow cards.

What’s the reason for the poor record? Bad refereeing? Ill discipline?

2010/11 – Centre Back Pairings

Part two of the centre back analysis was due to be a Townsend vs Kovacs style write up, but given todays news of Janos Kovacs leaving to Luton, and Michael Townsend getting dropped from the squad altogether on Saturday, I’ve adapted the original article slightly to focus on all the partnerships used at centre back last season, not just Kovacs and Townsend.

Simon Davey and Andy Fensome were trusted with leading Hereford into the new era under David Keyte and Tim Russon,  but they were dismissed after just 11 games.
